Adjectives & agreement

An adjective copies its noun's gender, number and case.

Adjectives echo their noun, so the ending shifts whenever the noun does. Master the three basic gender endings first; after that it is just matching coats.

GenderEndingExample
Masculine-y / -idobry, wysoki
Feminine-adobra, wysoka
Neuter-edobre, wysokie
Men (plural)-i / -ydobrzy, mili

Mam nową pracę.
I have a new job.
To jest mały pies.
This is a small dog.
Widzę wysokie drzewo.
I see a tall tree.
Ona ma długie włosy.
She has long hair.
To jest dobra książka.
This is a good book.
🧠 Tactic — Whatever case the noun takes, dress the adjective in the same case: dobrą kawę, dobrego psa. Same coat, both words.
⚠️ Watch out — Word order matters a little: nowy samochód is neutral; samochód nowy sounds emphatic or poetic.
