Colours — kolory in Polish — are a great early topic because they're concrete, easy to practise around you, and they double as a painless introduction to how Polish adjectives behave. The question Jaki to kolor? (What colour is it?) invites a one-word answer, and the words themselves are pleasant to say: czerwony (red), niebieski (blue), zielony (green), żółty (yellow), czarny (black), and biały (white).

Here's the useful grammar hiding in plain sight. Colour words are adjectives, and Polish adjectives must agree with the noun they describe in gender, number, and case. The dictionary form is masculine and ends in -y or -i: czerwony samochód (a red car). Make the noun feminine and the ending shifts to -a — czerwona sukienka (a red dress) — and neuter takes -e: czerwone jabłko (a red apple). So the very same colour appears as czerwony, czerwona, or czerwone depending on what it's colouring. Learning colours therefore quietly teaches you the single most important adjective pattern in the language.

Two colours are worth a special note. Red is deeply tied to Polish identity — the national flag is white and red (biało-czerwona) — so czerwony is a word you'll see and hear far beyond describing objects. And Polish, like many languages, has a couple of colours that sit between categories, so don't be surprised to meet różowy (pink), fioletowy (purple), brązowy (brown), and szary (grey) as you expand.
